Roofing in the Summer: How to Stay Safe When Working in the Heat

Blog Category : Customer Advice

Summer is one of the busiest times of year for roofing projects. Longer days and drier weather make it the perfect season to repair, maintain or install roofs—but warmer temperatures also bring additional risks.

Working on a roof means you’re exposed to direct sunlight with very little shade. Add reflective roofing materials, hot surfaces and physical labour into the mix, and it’s easy for temperatures to become dangerous.

Whether you’re a professional roofer or tackling a DIY project, staying safe in the heat should always be your top priority.

Why Working on a Roof is Hotter Than You Think

Even when the air temperature feels comfortable, roof surfaces can become significantly hotter.

Dark roofing materials such as felt, EPDM membranes, tiles and metal roofing absorb heat throughout the day, meaning the surface you’re standing or kneeling on may be much hotter than the surrounding air.

This increases the risk of:

  • Heat exhaustion
  • Dehydration
  • Sunburn
  • Reduced concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Heat stroke

When you’re working at height, even a momentary lapse in concentration can have serious consequences.

Start Early and Avoid Peak Heat

The hottest part of the day in the UK is usually between 11am and 3pm.

Where possible:

  • Start work early in the morning
  • Complete the most physically demanding jobs before midday
  • Save preparation or indoor tasks for the afternoon
  • Finish early if temperatures become excessive

Planning your day around the weather can make a huge difference to both productivity and safety.

Stay Hydrated

One of the biggest dangers during hot weather is dehydration.

By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already becoming dehydrated.

Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Top tips include:

  • Carry a reusable water bottle.
  • Take regular drinks every 15–20 minutes.
  • Avoid excessive energy drinks or alcohol before work.
  • Consider electrolyte drinks if you’re sweating heavily.

Keeping hydrated helps maintain concentration, balance and energy levels.

Protect Yourself from UV Exposure

Roofers spend hours exposed to direct sunlight, making sun protection essential.

To reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage:

  • Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen before starting work.
  • Reapply every two hours—or more often if you’re sweating heavily.
  • Wear UV-protective sunglasses.
  • Wear a lightweight baseball cap or neck shade where it won’t interfere with safety equipment.
  • Choose lightweight, breathable clothing that covers your skin.

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still cause damage.

Wear the Right Clothing

It can be tempting to wear as little as possible in hot weather, but exposed skin is more vulnerable to sunburn.

Instead choose:

  • Lightweight, breathable workwear
  • Moisture-wicking fabrics
  • Long sleeves where practical
  • Non-slip safety footwear
  • Lightweight work gloves

The right clothing keeps you cooler while also protecting your skin.

Take Regular Breaks

Working continuously in high temperatures increases the likelihood of fatigue.

Schedule regular breaks in the shade to allow your body to cool down.

Use your breaks to:

  • Drink water
  • Cool off
  • Reapply sunscreen
  • Eat light snacks to maintain energy

Remember—taking ten minutes to recover is far better than pushing through and risking illness or injury.

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion can develop surprisingly quickly, especially during physically demanding roofing work.

Look out for symptoms such as:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Muscle cramps
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Nausea
  • Fast heartbeat

If you notice these symptoms:

  1. Stop work immediately.
  2. Move into the shade.
  3. Drink cool water.
  4. Loosen unnecessary clothing.
  5. Cool the body with damp cloths or cool air.

If symptoms worsen or don’t improve within 30 minutes, seek medical advice.

Heat Stroke is a Medical Emergency

Heat stroke is much more serious than heat exhaustion.

Call 999 immediately if someone:

  • Stops sweating despite being hot
  • Becomes confused or disorientated
  • Collapses
  • Has a seizure
  • Loses consciousness

While waiting for help:

  • Move them into shade.
  • Cool them as quickly as possible.
  • Do not give fluids if they are unconscious.

Don’t Forget Roof Safety

The heat isn’t the only hazard.

Hot weather can also affect roofing materials:

  • Bitumen and asphalt can soften.
  • Adhesives may cure faster than expected.
  • Membranes can become hotter to handle.
  • Metal roofing becomes extremely hot in direct sunlight.

Always wear suitable PPE, use secure access equipment, and never let the heat distract you from safe working practices.

Look Out for Your Workmates

Roofing is often a team effort, and looking after each other is just as important as looking after yourself.

Keep an eye on colleagues for signs of:

  • Confusion
  • Slower reactions
  • Excessive tiredness
  • Unsteady movement
  • Unusual behaviour

Sometimes the person suffering from heat exhaustion doesn’t realise they’re becoming unwell.

Final Thoughts

Summer is a fantastic time to complete roofing projects, but warmer weather brings extra challenges. Staying hydrated, protecting yourself from the sun, taking regular breaks and recognising the signs of heat-related illness can help keep you safe throughout the working day.
